A north Komodo 4 day trip, on one operator's account, adds Castle Rock and Crystal Rock: Maika Dive names them as what its 4-day trip gains, and calls both advanced drift dives. Its plan gives snorkellers Gili Lawa and Crystal Bay that day, and no source here sorts those two by region, so ask any boat to name its northern stops.

Why does a north Komodo 4-day trip go there at all?

Because on one operator's account the north is what the fourth day buys. Maika Dive, an operator, draws the line this way: central Komodo on its 3-day route, the north on its 4-day route, with Castle Rock and Crystal Rock as the named gain. That statement applies to Maika's own route. It is not a rule for the park, and a different boat with a four-day label may not head this way at all.

Booking platforms use the same vocabulary. The Cajoma IV entry on Liveaboard.com reads Central and North, which tells you the direction intended but not the stops. So when you see "north" on a listing, treat it as a heading and ask for names.

Which stops do these two plans name?

Two published plans give enough detail to compare. Maika Dive's 4-day dive routine starts day one at Sebayur Kecil and Tatawa Besar, with a night dive at Crystal Bay, then spends day two at Crystal Rock, Castle Rock and The Cauldron before a night dive at Padar. Hello Flores, another operator, lists Gili Lawa Darat on day three of its sample, and does not sort its stops by region.

The same site can sit on different days of different plans, so a list of names tells you little about the order you will actually sail or how long you will have anywhere. Sailing plans for this end of the park are set out by area on the north, central or south comparison.

The August 2026 earthquake is also part of the picture. Jakarta Globe reported that activities had resumed at four areas including Gili Lawa. That report is from August 2026, so ask a provider whether anything has changed since.

How much of a four-day trip is spent in the north?

No published plan says. On Maika's routine, the sites it names as its northern gain fall on day two, and a Central and North label need not mean most of the trip is there. If the north is your whole reason for going, ask how many hours are planned there.

Ask as well how the plan fits the January 2026 harbourmaster order, reported by Indonesia Expat, that tourist boats anchor after dark in park waters. A published routine may predate it, and the night sailing ban page sets out what is known.

What do non-divers do while divers are in the north?

Something different, and it helps to know that before you pay for a route chosen for its dive sites. On Maika's plan, while divers are at Crystal Rock, Castle Rock and The Cauldron on day two, snorkellers go to Gili Lawa for hiking and to Crystal Bay. That gives a non-diver a full day of its own, but not at the sites that make Maika's 4-day trip different from its 3-day trip.

The practical reading for a mixed group:

  • If only one person dives, the rest are buying a snorkel plan alongside a dive plan. Ask how many hours each gets and whether the boat moves while one group waits.
  • If nobody dives, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock add little for you, since Maika's plan gives them to divers. Its alternative for the same day is the Gili Lawa hike and Crystal Bay. The snorkelling trip page lists what operators offer.
  • If everyone dives, the question moves on to currents and experience, covered next.

Hike time and difficulty at Gili Lawa are left out because dependable figures are hard to find. Sunrise or sunset timing at the viewpoint is also the operator's to state, so ask rather than assume it fits your day.

How strong are the currents up north?

Maika Dive rates Castle Rock and Crystal Rock as advanced drift dives in high current. That is one operator's description, and it comes with no figure for current speed. We can point to no certification rule from an authority for these sites, so whether a newly certified diver may join is for the operator to answer. Ask three things in writing: what certification and logged dives it requires, whether a diver can be moved to an easier site on the day, and what happens if the guide judges a dive unsuitable.

Plans can also change for reasons other than your experience level. Maika Dive's 3-day page leaves the captain free to switch sites when current or wind builds, and any northern plan is exposed to the same judgement, so a northern dive day is an intention and not a commitment. For dive-specific questions, including how operators describe levels, read the dives, currents and levels page.

Do mantas use the north?

One northern site appears in the research. A peer-reviewed study worked at four sites running north to south, and The Cauldron is one of them, alongside Karang Makassar, Mawan and Manta Alley. So the name on a Maika day-two plan is also a place where scientists recorded reef mantas. That is not a forecast for your dive and nobody can promise a sighting. The seasonal pattern in the same study and how the other sites compare are on the manta rays page.

Is a north Komodo trip the right choice?

It depends on who is aboard. The case for going north is strongest for experienced divers who want the sites Maika says its shorter trip misses. The case is weaker for non-divers, for anyone needing a single fixed stop, and for groups where nobody wants drift diving. Neutral data comparing north with south for enjoyment or value is missing, and few southern stops are named in print, so a real side-by-side is hard.

Which northern route questions should you settle first?

Is north Komodo worth visiting?

For experienced divers, Maika Dive gives one reason: it names Castle Rock and Crystal Rock as what its 4-day trip gains. For non-divers, its plan offers Gili Lawa and Crystal Bay that day instead, so compare those stops with what else the boat offers.

Does a 4 day Komodo trip include Gili Lawa?

Some do. Maika Dive sends snorkellers to Gili Lawa on day two and Hello Flores lists Gili Lawa Darat on day three of its sample, but neither plan is fixed and other boats may differ.

Does a 4 day Komodo trip include Crystal Rock or Castle Rock?

Maika Dive says its 4-day trip does, on day two of its dive routine, and that its 3-day trip does not. Those are dive stops on one operator's route, so ask any other boat directly.

Does a 4 day Komodo trip include the northern islands?

Not automatically. A Central and North listing suggests it, but Liveaboard.com also lists a Central and South 4D3N, so the four-day label alone does not tell you the direction.

Should you choose a northern or southern Komodo route?

The listings do not settle this for a four-day trip. Maria Seascape's entry ties direction to season only on longer trips, so ask which way a boat plans to go on your dates.

How do I reach the desk?

Say how many people dive, their certification and logged dives, and which month you are considering. The desk can then put the northern questions to providers and return what they say. It does not confirm boats, sites or departures itself, and anything agreed appears in a written offer. A request may lead to a paid booking, which gives us a commercial interest.

Reach the desk on WhatsApp at +62 811-3823-875 or by email.
