The best time for a Komodo 4D3N, reading the sources where they overlap, is late April to October. Maika Dive stretches its window through November, Come2Indonesia and AirAsia stop at October, and Weather Spark's modelled wetter period ends on 18 April. Most of these writers sell travel, and none of them forecasts the sea.

When is the best time for a Komodo 4D3N?

Each source draws its own line around the good months, so the answer starts with who said what. Late April to October is our reading of the stretch that all of them accept. It is an editorial reading and not a published season. Timing sits alongside boat and budget in our main Komodo 4D3N guide.

Seek SophieBooking agencyMost boats do not run January to March, apart from one-day speedboats that may also cancel

Read by quarter, those positions leave a four-day traveller with this picture:

  • January to March. The hardest quarter to plan. Weather Spark has February as its wettest month, and Seek Sophie's claim about boats not running falls here.
  • April to June. The quarter with the least argument once Weather Spark's wetter season ends in mid-April, since every seller window above is open by then.
  • July to September. Weather Spark's driest month, August, and the heaviest reported demand, with separate agency claims about mantas and dragons covered further down.
  • October to December. The quarter where the sources part. October is in every window, November only in Maika Dive's, and December in none.

A four-day trip raises the stakes on this choice. You are committing three nights in a row to one stretch of water, so a forecast that looks fine for a day trip needs to hold for longer. The sellers above also have an obvious reason to describe more months as good, which is why the modelled data sits beside them.

When does the wet period start and end?

This is where the sources disagree most. Weather Spark puts the wetter season at Labuan Bajo from 11 November to 18 April, about 5.2 months. Maika Dive counts November inside its best window, so the month that starts Weather Spark's wet period is still a good one by the operator's account. Come2Indonesia and AirAsia close the good period a month earlier and give the same April to October span.

The strongest claim comes from Seek Sophie, which says most boats do not run from January to March. A public listing complicates that: the Bajak page on Liveaboard.com shows a 4D3N departure on 21 February 2027. A listed date shows that some boats schedule the period, and it does not show that the trip will sail. For how to judge those months, read the page on a Komodo boat trip in the wet season.

How do wind and rain change by month?

This table groups the figures by quarter and keeps a named source on every row, because the numbers do not come from a single dataset.

How do wind and rain change by month?

January to MarchWindier part of the year runs 12 December to 11 March; January averages 6.1 mph on landWeather Spark

October to DecemberWetter season begins 11 NovemberWeather Spark

The gap between 16.7 and 21.15 February days shows why the source name belongs beside each figure. Neither number should be quoted alone, and we have not averaged them.

A warning on wind before anyone relies on it. Weather Spark's wind figures come from land data and are modelled. A low average on land says little about swell in a channel or current at a particular dive site, and the land average is the only wind number published here. Treat any Komodo 4D3N weather page, this one included, as a guide to the season, and ask the operator about conditions close to departure.

What about water temperature?

It barely decides anything. Weather Spark has water averaging from 80 F in August to 84 F in December, roughly 27 C to 29 C. A swing that small is unlikely to change which month you pick, although a diver who feels the cold should ask the operator what suit its guests use in August.

Clarity is a separate question from warmth. Month-by-month figures for water visibility in the dry season are not published, so a claim about the clearest month deserves a question about where it came from.

How do mantas shift by season?

A peer-reviewed study of reef mantas in the park links visits rising in the south during the south-east monsoon and in the central region during the north-west monsoon. It frames the pattern by monsoon and region, so it gives a general pattern and no calendar of good dates. Seek Sophie's own claim points the same way: it says Manta Point sightings are low from July to September.

The practical reading is that the driest months may not be the best months for a central manta stop, and that a route's direction matters as much as its date. A sighting is never promised, and the separate page on manta rays on a four-day trip sets out the sites. On land, Seek Sophie also says large dragons are harder to find in July and August because of mating. That is an agency's claim, and other writers disagree further down, but it is another reason not to assume the driest weeks suit every aim.

How do crowds change through the year?

Kompas, citing West Manggarai statistics for 2024, puts peak demand in July to October, averaging 1,250 to 1,500 visits a day. A personal report on the blog A Passion and a Passport names July and August as the most crowded months. The two fit only in part: both include high summer, while Kompas extends the busy period through October.

Those demand figures predate the park's daily visitor limit, which took effect in 2026, so the 2024 pattern may not repeat. The page on peak season in Komodo goes through what that means for booking. For this decision, the short version is that the months with the driest modelled weather and the months with the heaviest reported demand overlap heavily, which leaves late April and May as the months outside every reported busy window. June falls inside Neptune's warning that the park can fill on some dates, and November is split, so treat this as inference.

Do dragons get harder to see in the mating months?

Writers disagree. Visit Indonesia says dragons tend to hide in the mating season and names late March to May as the best time to see them. Wandering Nomada, a travel blog, visited in early July and says most adults had moved further inside the park, though it still saw smaller ones near the ranger post. Neptune Liveaboards, an operator, reads the same months the other way on Rinca, reporting high dragon activity around nesting in July and August. These are descriptions and not counts of sightings. If dragons are the reason for your trip, ask the provider which island it lands on in your month and how far the walk goes.

What else do people ask about the best month for Komodo?

When are seas calm near Labuan Bajo?

The sea itself goes unmeasured in these figures. Weather Spark's wind data is modelled for land, and it shows the windier part of the year as 12 December to 11 March. Ask the operator about current conditions before departure.

Is April good for Komodo?

Maika Dive, Come2Indonesia and AirAsia all place April inside their good period. Weather Spark's wetter season runs to 18 April, so the second half of the month has the stronger support across these sources.

Is May good for Komodo?

May sits inside every window listed here, and Sunheron reports rainfall falling to 74.54 mm that month. It also falls before the July to October peak reported by Kompas.

Is October good for Komodo?

October is the last dry month for Come2Indonesia and AirAsia, and it is inside Maika Dive's window. Kompas also places it in peak demand, based on 2024 statistics.

Is November good for Komodo?

The sources split. Maika Dive includes November in its best conditions, Come2Indonesia and AirAsia end the dry season in October, and Weather Spark's wetter period begins on 11 November.

What month is best for a Komodo 4D3N tour?

Nobody names a single best month. May fits every window on this page and falls before both Kompas's peak and Neptune's June to September warning, but mantas, crowds and your own dates may point elsewhere. That is our reading, and no operator has confirmed it.

How do I reach the desk?

If you have a month in mind, tell the desk your dates by WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or by email. It cannot promise weather or a sailing, and only a written offer naming the price and the contracting company is binding. A paid booking can follow from a request, which gives us a commercial interest; the disclaimer sets this out.
