Komodo peak season has no single official definition. West Manggarai statistics for 2024, reported by Kompas, put peak demand in July to October, while the operator Neptune says the park can fill on some dates from June to September. A four-day trip needs park access on several dates, and no booking lead time is published.
When is Komodo peak season?
Three sources give three windows, and all three overlap only in July and August. We show them apart because they measure different things: one is a statistic, one an operator's warning and one a traveller's impression.
| Source | Type | Window | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kompas, citing West Manggarai statistics for 2024 | Press | July to October | Peak demand, averaging 1,250 to 1,500 visits a day |
| Neptune Liveaboards | Operator | June to September | The park can fill on some dates |
| A Passion and a Passport | Travel blog | July and August | The most crowded months |
Note that the Kompas article is an AI translation that Kompas itself flags, so treat its finer wording with some care. The month-by-month reading below keeps each source separate.
| Month | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| June | Inside Neptune's window; outside the Kompas peak and the blog's busiest months |
| July | Named by all three |
| August | Named by all three. Driest and lowest water temperature on Weather Spark's model. |
| September | Inside the Kompas peak and Neptune's window; not among the blog's busiest |
| October | Inside the Kompas peak only |
How crowded does it get?
The only peak-month average on record is that Kompas figure of 1,250 to 1,500 visits a day. Jakarta Globe also reported more than 2,000 visitors in the area on 17 August 2026, which may not mean the park. The Kompas figure is from 2024, before today's limit, and as an overall average it cannot tell you how a given bay will feel on a given morning. A Passion and a Passport calls July and August the most crowded months, but that is a personal report and fits the Kompas window only in part.
Crowding also concentrates around certain places and days. Seek Sophie, a booking agency, warns of crowding around the mantas on local holidays and tells readers to avoid those dates because queues form on Padar. If a viewpoint matters to you, read Padar sunrise on a 4-day trip before fixing your dates. September is not shown to be quieter than August in any measured way, even though the blog's wording may suggest it.
Does the park fill up?
An operator says it can. Neptune Liveaboards says the park can fill on some dates from June to September. There is no published count of full dates, so how often this happens is unknown. The park's daily cap is explained on the 1,000 visitor limit page, and the Kompas average above sits higher than that figure.
This matters more for a four-day trip than for a day trip. A multi-day boat wants access on consecutive dates, so one full date in the middle can disturb a whole plan. Tickets are not portable either: Maika Dive describes them as locked to a passport number and a date. Moving your trip by a day may therefore mean new tickets, if the new dates are open at all.
How early should a 4-day trip be booked?
Be suspicious of any precise lead time you read, since none is published. Neptune's advice stops at sooner being better for quota. On Maika Dive's account, park access is now processed once a deposit is confirmed, which gives you the order of events, if not the timing: boat first, deposit next, park access after that. So your dates are not secured by a friendly reply on chat.
A sensible sequence for June to October dates looks like this:
- Fix your date window, and decide how far it could move.
- Ask the provider which of those dates can still be processed for park access, and when it will know.
- Before paying a deposit, ask what happens if the park is full on one of your dates, and whether the deposit comes back.
- Hold off on flights that cannot be changed until the boat and park dates are confirmed in writing.
- Give passport details exactly as printed, since the tickets are tied to them.
What are the upsides?
Dry weather is the obvious one. Weather Spark, using modelled data, shows August as the driest month at Labuan Bajo and February as the wettest. Its water averages run from 80 F in August to 84 F in December, about 27 C to 29 C, so August water is the coolest of the year on that model. Those are averages from a model and do not predict your week. Wind is a separate question, so ask an operator about August wind on your route.
There is also a trade-off for dragon watchers. Seek Sophie blames mating for large dragons being harder to find in July and August. That is a booking agency's claim. Neptune Liveaboards reads the same months the other way for Rinca, as the best time for a Komodo 4D3N sets out, along with the wetter months.
How can you use these windows if your dates can move?
Flexibility is the most useful thing you can bring to a capped park, and the three windows suggest where to spend it.
- July or August are fixed for you. Every source treats them as busy, so ask about park access first and leave flights until it is answered.
- You can move to June. Only Neptune's warning applies, though that warning is about full dates and it is an operator's own view.
- You can move to October. Only the Kompas window applies. The months after that are covered on the wet season boat trip page.
- You can shift by a few days only. Use that to step around a local holiday, since a small move can matter more there than a change of month.
What about local holidays?
Treat them as a separate calendar from the season. Seek Sophie's two warnings, on the mantas and on Padar, are about holidays and not about months, so a date in a quieter stretch can still be busy. This page prints no holiday list, and no rule says which holidays affect which sites. Check Indonesia's public holidays for your year, ask your provider whether any fall inside your four days, and ask how the boat adjusts its plan when they do.
What do people ask about each peak month?
Is June good for Komodo?
June falls in Neptune's June to September window but outside the Kompas peak. Nobody calls it quiet. Check quota early if your dates are fixed, and ask an operator about wind and sea on your route.
Is July good for Komodo?
All three sources place July in the busy period. If you travel then, start early on park access and read the agency's remark on dragons in the section on upsides above.
Is August good for Komodo?
Weather Spark's model shows it as the driest month, and the blog, Kompas and Neptune all place it in the busy period. That makes it a trade between rain and pressure on dates.
Is September good for Komodo?
It sits inside both the Kompas peak and Neptune's window, but outside the blog's two busiest months. That is not proof that it is quieter, so treat permits and boats as you would for August.
How far in advance should you book Komodo 4D3N?
There is no published lead time beyond Neptune's advice to go early for quota. For June to October dates, start with the provider's answer on park access before you commit to fixed flights.

How do I reach the desk?
Travelling in the busy months? Tell us your date window and how far it can move, on WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or by email. The desk asks providers what they can process. Park access and a place on a boat rest with them, so treat your dates as open until a written offer states them. A request can become a paid booking, and that is our commercial interest.
Send the desk your dates, group size, and boat preference. The desk replies in writing.
