Shared or private Komodo boat comes down to group size, departure days and how much planning you want to do. Seek Sophie, a booking agency, suggests shared for solo travellers and couples, and private from four people or when time is limited. Nearly every source on this question sells boat trips, so read accordingly.

Shared or private Komodo boat: what is the real difference?

On a shared boat, which sellers may also call an open trip, you buy a place among other guests. On a private boat your group has the vessel to itself. Maika Dive frames the trade-off in terms of effort: it describes a shared tour as organised and a private tour as needing more planning. That is a useful point because it runs against the usual assumption that private means less work for you. Someone has to choose the boat, the dates and the route, and on a private trip more of those questions land on your group. Both options are sold under the same Komodo 4D3N label, which is why the label alone settles nothing.

A third variable causes much of the confusion: the cabin. A shared trip does not have to mean a shared room. Listings show how far this ranges, and they are examples, not recommendations.

So there are really three questions when comparing a Komodo 4D3N: who else is on the boat, who else is in your cabin, and who else uses your bathroom. "Private cabin" answers only the second, and a listing that says "private" with no noun attached may mean any of them. Ask.

Which suits solo travellers and couples?

Seek Sophie suggests shared for both, which is a rule of thumb from an agency that sells these trips. The likely logic, which is ours and not the agency's, is that a small group would carry a whole boat's costs alone. Solo travellers can join a boat by buying a single place, and on a boat like Bajak that may mean a bunk among strangers. If you would not sleep well with that, ask specifically about a solo traveller's cabin options, and whether taking a cabin alone costs more.

Couples have a middle option that is easy to overlook. Maika Dive publishes both shared-cabin and double-bed-cabin prices for its four-day trip, and the price table on this page shows the snorkel version of each. A double cabin on a shared boat keeps the sleeping arrangement private while you split the rest of the trip with other guests. Whether that is enough privacy depends on how you feel about sharing a deck and a dinner table for three nights.

When does private make sense?

Seek Sophie's threshold is four people, or a trip with time limits. Neither point has outside numbers behind it in the sources we cite, so treat four as a place to start your own sums. Those sums have a catch here: the price table on this page has no published whole-boat price. Its rows are per-person or seller estimates, and the Le Costa line does not state its unit beside the price. You cannot work out a break-even from it, and we will not guess at one.

To compare properly, ask for the total price of the boat for your dates in writing, including park charges or a statement that they are extra. Divide by your group. Then set that beside a per-person shared quote for the same number of nights. Check what the two quotes include before you trust the difference, since Maika Dive lists bed, meals, water, briefings, guides and gear as included on its liveaboards, on its three-day page, and another seller's list may be shorter.

Group size has practical limits too. A four-cabin boat such as Cajoma IV is listed for 8 guests, so a party of six would be split across cabins, and a party of four on a much larger boat would be paying for beds it does not use. Ask how many guests the boat sleeps in which cabins, and how your group would be divided. Then consider the softer factors. A family or a group of friends can simply prefer not to share meals with strangers, and that is a fair reason whatever the arithmetic shows.

Are shared departures on fixed days?

Often, yes. In Seek Sophie's account, shared trips come with fixed departure constraints and private boats do not. Komodo Touristic, a seller, says shared departures often run Monday or Friday from Labuan Bajo, but that statement applies to the boats it lists, which are mostly three-day trips. Departure days for four-day shared boats vary, so do not plan flights around Monday or Friday until a seller confirms the day for your specific departure.

This can decide the matter for you. If your flights are already fixed and no shared boat leaves on a day that fits, a private boat may be the only way to make the dates work, assuming one is free. On that same account a private boat frees you from the fixed day, though no format exempts you from weather or the captain's decisions.

What should you compare?

Almost everything written on this subject comes from someone selling one or both formats. Comparing the details below will tell you more than any seller's summary of which format is better.

  • The boat and cabin. Name, guest count, cabin count, and whether the bathroom is en-suite. Our guide to boats on a 4D3N trip explains the terms.
  • What moves the price. Maika Dive says its prices depend on which of its boats is available, snorkel or dive, and any course.
  • What is excluded. Park fees and other required extras appear separately on liveaboard listings. The full cost breakdown sets the published lines side by side.
  • Who sets the route. On a private boat, ask how much say your group has in practice.
  • Departure day. Get it in writing for a four-day trip, not a three-day one.
  • Safety questions. Nothing in these sources shows that either format is safer, so ask the same questions of both. The page on whether a Komodo boat trip is safe lists them.

Before you settle this, compare published itineraries and route labels, because a private boat changes who decides them. If the extra night is still in doubt, read what the extra day adds. Divers should see the Komodo 4-day dive trip.

Are most four-day trips shared or private?

Seek Sophie, a booking agency, says on its 4D3N page that most of these trips are private, and it still lists a shared cruise beside them. That describes one seller's shelf and is no census of the market. Komodo Touristic's list of shared boats is mostly three-day trips, which says nothing about how four-day trips split. In practice, if you want a shared cabin for four days, ask for the dates first and the boat second, because a shared four-day place may take more asking to find, on Seek Sophie's page at least. If nothing fits, ask for a whole-boat quote and divide it by your group, then compare the inclusions line by line.

What else do people ask about shared and private boats?

Should I choose a shared or private boat in Komodo?

Seek Sophie's rule of thumb is shared for solo travellers and couples, and private from four people or with time limits. It is an agency's view, so test it against real quotes for your dates.

Is a private Komodo boat worth it for four days?

That depends on your group size and the whole-boat quote, and no neutral comparison is published. Divide the written total by your guests, then compare it with a shared per-person quote covering the same inclusions.

Can solo travellers join a Komodo 4-day boat?

Shared boats sell places to individuals, and Seek Sophie suggests them for solo travellers. Listings such as Bajak show shared cabins of four bunks. Ask what cabin you would have and on which days the boat leaves.

How many people share a Komodo 4D3N boat?

It varies by boat. Listings show 8 guests on Cajoma IV and 14 on Bajak, while Komodo Touristic lists shared boats from 12 to 35 passengers, mostly on 3D2N trips. Ask for the number on your own departure.

Do Komodo boats have private bathrooms?

Some do. The Cajoma IV listing describes 4 en-suite cabins, but listings vary, so ask about the exact cabin before you agree to anything.

Which published prices did we check?

Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Fees and fares change, and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

How do I reach the desk?

Group size and dates are the two things worth sending first, by WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or email. Nothing is reserved by asking, and no boat or cabin is yours until a written offer sets out the price and the contracting company. We have a commercial interest, as a request can turn into a paid booking; see the disclaimer.
